Strange / unusual points

One especially interesting feature is how openly Schwartz discusses the underappreciated status of Byzantine art in broader education. She notes that many students may know Gothic churches but have heard almost nothing about Byzantium apart from Justinian and Hagia Sophia. That kind of disciplinary self-awareness is unusual in a handbook introduction and makes the book more reflective than a purely neutral reference volume.

My judgment

This looks like a very strong scholarly handbook. It is best for readers who want a serious long-term resource on Byzantine art and architecture rather than a quick visual survey. Its strongest qualities are breadth, structure, and methodological awareness. It will not be the easiest first book for every casual reader, but for students, teachers, researchers, and committed art-history readers, it is likely to be one of the most useful one-volume gateways into the field.
