My judgment: this is a strong, well-designed foundational survey for serious beginners and course settings. Its biggest advantage is not just the range of material, but the way it repeatedly teaches the reader how to think like an art historian—through definition, structured objectives, guided looking, and evidence-based interpretation.

If your goal is a fast, purely narrative overview, it may feel too systematic. But if your goal is to build durable art-history literacy—terminology, methods, and the ability to argue from visual evidence—this volume’s structure is an asset rather than a burden.
